New gage paint technology saves automakers money

January 30, 2006 — /PRNewswire/ — FERNDALE, Mich. — An advanced automotive paint technology system designed to help automakers save money and increase efficiency has been developed at Gage Products Company, a global leader in closed-loop recycling processes for automotive paint solvents.

Gage’s Cobra(TM) paint-line cleaning program is a patented system that increases paint-line efficiency levels by more than 20 percent, while reducing material-usage costs by more than 10 percent.

“We’re committed to helping the industry provide sustainable solutions and long-term environmental benefits, while paring costs,” said Gage President Donald Dixon.

Dixon presented Gage’s paint and sealer cleaning-system technology at the University of Kentucky as part of a recent supplier seminar. The presentation, “New State-of-the-Art Technology for Cleaning Paint and Sealer Lines,” is downloadable at http://www.gageproducts.com/ .

“Our new paint and sealant cleaning technology can restore paint lines to what we refer to as Bare Metal Clean(R),” said Dixon. “Instead of replacing a system’s piping, you can bring it back to its original clean-metal condition and continue to use it — a concept many don’t believe is possible.”

Other benefits of the sealer line-cleaning process include up to an 80 percent decrease in total system pressure and improved sealer-viscosity control and flow rates.

Gage line-cleaning products include the S-590 Cobra(TM) Line Cleaner, a patented blend of solvents and solid agents that mechanically and chemically “scrubs” paint and other contaminants from piping-system surfaces. It also uses solid-stream cleaning chemicals to remove dried paint residue and oxidation build-up to restore components and parts to bare-metal clean, rendering them reusable and recyclable.

Dixon noted that automotive cost pressures have never been greater.

“Automakers are finding that better maintenance procedures for paint and sealant-delivery systems can generate significant savings,” he said. “Our new paint-technology cleaning process has been well received by OEMs. We expect the number of our paint-cleaning programs to increase by up to 30 percent in the coming year. We also are putting in place new plant start-up operations.”

A global company, Gage is recognized as a pioneer in the field of sustainable manufacturing and solvent-remanufacturing techniques. Over the past 18 years, Gage’s closed-loop recycling systems have been used by General Motors, Ford and Chrysler to safely recycle more than 70-million gallons of waste material. Other automotive customers include Fiat, Honda, Jaguar, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Volvo and Nissan.

Headquartered in Ferndale, Mich., Gage has facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil and Mexico. The company also manufactures paint-related products and cleaners for a wide variety of industrial uses, as well as calibration and test fuels for use in the auto industry.
