Tosoh buys Cabot thin-film site

February 17, 2006 – Tosoh SMD has acquired the former Cabot Thin Films business in Etna, OH, which manufactures tantalum sputtering targets used in manufacturing semiconductors, optics, magnetics, and flat-panel displays. The addition will increase Tosoh’s capacity to address the 300mm market.

Cabot Supermetals, a unit of Cabot Corp., opened the $12 million, 90,000 sq. ft facility in March 2005. Built as a “lights-out” environment, the facility incorporates robotic handling systems, dynamic scheduling, and automated process control to handle processes for metal joining, shaping, machining, and surface finishing steps.
