Samsung, Wacker mulling Singapore wafer supply

March 2, 2006 – Samsung Electronics Co. and Wacker-Chemie GmbH’s Siltronic subsidiary are reportedly in talks to set up a JV in Singapore to supply silicon wafers.

A report in the Financial Times Deutschland noted the negotiations involve investing “a nine-figure sum,” or hundreds of millions of euros, in a new production facility.

Siltronic generates about a third of revenues for parent company Wacker-Chemie, which is planning to spin off as much as 40% of the unit in a public offering on the Frankfurt stock exchange within months or even weeks, the report noted.
