IEST online education: Personnel in Cleanrooms

April 25, 2006 — /IEST/ — ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. — The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) continues to offer valuable online education classes. “Personnel in Cleanrooms” will be presented on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 11:00 AM Central Daylight Savings Time. Learn from your desk, conference room, or auditorium without travel expenses. The per-site fee has no limit on the number of students who may participate at each location.

This course presents a comprehensive overview of the considerations for staffing and operation of cleanrooms and controlled environments for microelectronics and precision assembly. Many of the subjects covered can be equally applied to pharmaceutical and biomedical controlled environments, but aseptic concerns are not specifically addressed. The course follows these considerations in basic chronological order and includes the topics of: Hiring Procedures; Hygiene/Health; Training/Compliance; Gowning; Entry Procedures; Behavior; Change Rooms; Monitoring/Auditing; Gowning System Management; Exiting/Emergency Evacuation. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

A copy of IEST-RP-CC027.2: Personnel Practices and Procedures in Cleanrooms and Controlled Environments will be distributed to all participants.

The instructor is Gary W. Knoth, Senior Principal Contamination Control Engineer for Western Digital Corporation. He is responsible for a wide range of contamination control programs. His career began with IBM in 1965 and his involvement with contamination control started in 1975, as a mechanical facility engineer designing cleanrooms and high purity water systems. During his IBM career he acquired more than 20 years of contamination control experience including a one year assignment with International SEMATECH in Austin, Texas. He retired from the position of Chairman of the IBM World-Wide Corporate Contamination Control Council and IBM San Jose, Site Contamination Control Engineer, in 1995. He is the Chairman of Working Group CC027: Personnel Practices and Procedures in Cleanrooms and Controlled Environments and a voting member of several other IEST working groups.

Founded in 1953, IEST is an international technical society of engineers, scientists, and educators that serves its members and the industries they represent (simulating, testing, controlling, and teaching the environments of earth and space) through education and the development of recommended practices and standards.

IEST is an ANSI-accredited standards-developing organization; Secretariat of ISO/TC 209 Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments; Administrator of the ANSI-accredited US TAG to ISO/TC 209; Administrator of the ANSI-accredited US TAG to ISO/TC 142 Cleaning equipment for air and other gases; and a founding member of the ANSI-accredited US TAG to ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies.
