Qualcomm, TSMC sampling 65nm wireless devices

April 5, 2006 – Fabless giant QUALCOMM Inc. is sampling new wireless devices based on TSMC’s 65nm process technology, two months ahead of schedule and less than a month after initial tests on the devices, the companies said.

The QUALCOMM Mobile Station Modem (MSM) MSM6800 chipset for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A networks was delivered to QUALCOMM earlier this year. Product design and process technology development were done in parallel to remove design barriers and speed up the technology ramp to volume production, noted Kenneth Kin, SVP of worldwide sales and service at TSMC.

TSMC has completed five CyberShuttle prototype production runs for its 65nm process technology since October 2005. The foundry currently projects it will ramp 65nm production later this year, with other 65nm prototyping shuttles launched every other month.
