April 11, 2006 – South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Corp. and Japan’s Sony Corp. plan to invest up to $2.0 billion for a new facility to produce 8G (2200mm x 2500mm) liquid-crystal display panels at their joint facility in Tangjeong, South Korea. Production of 50,000 units/month is expected to start in the fall of 2007.
The JV, S-LCD, was established in April 2004 with roughly $1.8 billion in shared investments. The companies announced in November they would invest 10 billion yen (about US $97 million) to hike 7G capacity from 60,000 panels/month to 75,000 panels/month by July.
