SMIC, Aurora ramp LCOS chip output

May 8, 2006 – Chinese foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) has ramped to volume production for Aurora Systems Inc.’s liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) panel chips, the companies announced.

The digital LCOS panel chips, in both 1920×1080) and 1280×720 resolutions, targets high-definition televisions, enabling low defect LCOS panel and systems optics. The companies have been collaborating since early 2005.

“SMIC intends to expand its alliances with HDTV industry leaders, such as Aurora, to further deliver high quality products that continue to push the performance level,” stated James Sung, VP of marketing and sales at SMIC. “We aim to be the foundry of choice for LCOS backplane wafers to global IDM and fabless customers.”
