Agere tapes out 90nm chip with X Architecture

June 28, 2006 – Agere Systems has completed design and implementation of a 90nm mobile handset chip utilizing the X Architecture, claiming to be the first fabless company to successfully tape out a 90nm X Architecture production design. The chip, part of Agere’s Vision line of 2.5G-3G mobile baseband chips, used TSMC’s 90nm process, based on Cadence Design System’s Encounter system.

Benefits from utilizing the X Architecture include reduced die size and power dissipation, stated Craig Garen, VP of mobility product development with Agere, adding that wirelength was reduced by more than nine meters (approximately 30%) vs. the traditional “Manhattan” wire routing layout.
