Biometric technology is changing the approach taken in national security and changing the look of your passport. US-VISIT, a program within the Department of Homeland Security, is taking advantage of the possibilities available in smart cards—credit card-sized plastic cards embedded with contactless integrated circuit (IC) chips that provide memory capacity for biometric as well as biographical data. Using smart chips embedded in passports, security personnel can match facial topography maps from a digital photo stored on the smart card to the presenter.
