Unaxis Optics puts backing behind laser firm

June 16, 2006 – Unaxis Optics, a developer of coatings for optical components, has acquired a strategic stake in Novalux Inc., a developer of semiconductor laser technology used in projection displays. The two firms also have agreed to develop applications for solid-state laser technology, under the “NECSEL” brand (Novalux extended cavity surface-emitting laser), including development of the basic laser module for mass production, and commercialization by Unaxis Optics.

The companies claim that laser-based systems powered by NECSEL display images with “truer colors, greater brilliancy and higher reliability,” while shortening start-up time for projectors. It also will open up new markets for the firms, including pico-projection and 3D applications.

The technology “is an innovation that will reshuffle the market for front and rear projection displays and represent the future direction of projections systems,” stated Thomas Limberger, CEO of Unaxis
