Keith Felton, product marketing group director, Cadence Design Systems, confirmed my suspicions during a briefing on the company’s latest offering for system-in-package (SiP) design, which is targeted at cellular wireless and wireless mobility. Felton explained that the problem stems from a lack of real estate inside the phone to build an effective front-end section into the design. Transmission strength in newer phones is down to 0.2 and 0.3W, and older phones like mine had as much as 1W, which is extremely noisy and affects other functionalities. Also, a powerful RF interface combined with an MP3 player, camera, PDA, etc. can really eat up the power supply.
