SST’s Haavind wins Gold at ASBPE awards

August 4, 2006 – Solid State Technology editorial director Bob Haavind has won a gold national award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE), for two of his editorials in SST‘s September and November 2005 issues, addressing topics in education and future energy resource challenges.

The “Azbee” award was presented at the ASBPE’s Special Awards Banquet on the July 20th, 2006 in Chicago, IL, earned within the category of “Editorial/Editor’s Letter,” spanning national publications with circulation <80,000. The ASBPE awards drew a record of more than 2600 submissions.

Haavind’s Sept. 2005 editorial, “Educating Innovators,” addressed concerns whether the US will continue to be a world leader in ‘innovation.’ That will depend, he explained, on how well prepared the next generation will be to continue to create new technology, and whether (and how) the current generation can help them develop a “thirst” for knowledge. In the Nov. 2005 issue of SST, in an editorial titled “The future of energy,” Haavind discussed concerns about the world’s growing energy usage, availability and costs of oil/gas, and noted progress toward new energy sources such as solar and wind power. Our semiconductor industry has already demonstrated it can keep up with Moore’s Law and a parade of seemingly insurmountable hurdles for nearly half a century, he said — so surely we can handle just about anything else that comes along, including figuring out solutions for current or projected energy concerns. “Bob’s contributions to SST and PennWell, as well as many prior high tech publications and pure business journals, have been enormous,” stated David Barach, group publisher for Solid State Technology and Advanced Packaging. “He remains genuinely passionate, enthused and deeply interested in the rapid worldwide changes in technology, the future of energy, the dire need to educate our youth and get them more “turned on” about science, math, and technology.”
