April 17, 2007 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has licensed its 0.13-micron SONOS embedded nonvolatile memory technology to China’s Hua Hong NEC Electronics Co. Ltd. Hua Hong already makes embedded EEPROM and OTP (0.35-micron) as well as embedded flash (0.25-micron) at mass production levels.
SONOS-based flash memory technology offers excellent salability, high endurance, low power, and radiation hardness, and is highly compatible with standard CMOS technologies, the companies noted, adding that it also has a low mask adder compared to other embedded NVM technologies.
“By leveraging Cypress’s experience with SONOS technology, Hua Hong NEC can offer its customers a more comprehensive and higher quality foundry service,” said Steve Liu, president of Hua Hong NEC, in a statement, adding that the 0.13um SONOS NVM technology will target applications such as smart cards and microcontrollers.
For Cypress, the deal helps push its SONOS technology further into a variety of embedded NVM applications, noted Shahin Sharifzadeh, EVP of wafer fabs and technology.
