May 8, 2007 – Inventory corrections and memory price volatility helped cause a shakeup among the top-ranked IC providers in 1Q07, and will likely keep the list of top chipmakers in flux through the rest of the year, according to new rankings from IC Insights Inc.
Intel maintained its top spot with just over $8 billion in sales in 1Q07, followed by Samsung (~$4.7 billion).
Big gainers include Toshiba, Sony, and Hynix, all of whom climbed two spots higher in the top-10 ranks. Sony’s entry into the top 10 is due to increased internal usage of chips for its PlayStation 3 game consoles.
Despite DRAM pricing volatility, two top memory suppliers raced up the charts: Micron leapfrogged three places to No.11 and only $19 million behind No.10 NXP, while Elpida gained five spots to No. 18. Qimonda also moved up two positions, to No.13.
Losing ground on the top 20 semiconductor supplier rankings were TI, ST, TSMC, Freescale, NEC, AMD, IBM, and Fujitsu.
IC Insights noted that continued DRAM and flash memory pricing volatility, the end of IC inventory workdowns by the end of 2Q07, and an anticipated seasonal rebound in IC demand in 3Q mean that these rankings will likely fluctuate again throughout the year.
