RF provider WJ: We’re going fabless

May 25, 2007 – WJ Communications Inc., a designer and supplier of radio frequency (RF) technology for wireless and RFID markets says it has sold its entire wafer manufacturing equipment for $1.8 million in cash to AmpTech Inc., to whom the company will lease its company’s Milpitas, CA facility and sign a technology license and foundry deal.

AmpTech says it will offer to keep some WJ employees, and expects to ramp production “in the near term.”

Bruce Diamond, president/CEO of WJ, explained that the deal to sell the manufacturing site and tools to go fabless provides WJ with a dual-source foundry strategy to ensure future capacity flexibility. Last year WJ signed a foundry deal with Global Communication Semiconductors Inc. for InGaP HBT and GaAs technology.
