UMC profits plummet amid customer cutbacks

May 1, 2007 – Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) posted a profit of ~$31.7 million in 1Q07, its lowest in seven quarters, representing a 74% decrease from 4Q06 and 88% lower than a year ago, attributed to slow orders from customers such as Texas Instruments as they worked down inventories. UMC officials will discuss the 1Q results in more detail later in the week, noted newswire reports.
