Intel shifting embedded NOR flash to 65nm

August 21, 2007 – Intel says it will move to 65nm process technologies for its embedded NOR flash products to maintain “price/performance balance and ensure support for extended product lifecycles,” with first samples expected in 1H08.

“Most embedded designs remain in production longer than cell phones or other consumer devices,” said Glen Hawk, GM of Intel’s flash products group. Intel’s NOR wireless products are already at high-volume manufacturing at this node, he noted, and that knowledge will be utilized to accelerate product development and production ramp for the embedded flash.

Intel’s NOR assets and resources are being combined with those of STMicroelectronics in a new JV, “Numonyx,” a venture that recently got the go-ahead from the EU.
