August 7, 2007 – Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments accelerated a bit in 2Q07, to nearly 5% vs. 1Q and 12% from a year ago, still being driven by continued 300mm shipments according to the latest data from SEMI’s Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG).
Total silicon wafer area shipments were 2201 millions of sq. in. (MSI), up 4.8% sequentially and 11.9% vs. 2Q06, after a slow 1Q which saw just 1.4% sequential growth, suggesting that wafer shipments are defying “recent concerns regarding the health of the industry,” noted Volker Braetsch, chairman of SEMI’s SMG and VP of Siltronic AG.
Braetsch pointed to 300mm shipments as the main silicon shipment growth driver, noting that 300mm shipments made up roughly 35% of total silicon area shipped in 2Q.
