Small tech makes strong showing among last NIST ATP grant winners

October 2, 2007 — About 30% of the 56 projects awarded grants recently by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) contain a small tech element. The agency’s Advanced Technology Program (ATP) gives grants for innovative industrial research and development programs, and among the awardees announced September 27, 15 involve nanotechnology, one uses MEMS, and one employs microfluidics.

In total, NIST’s new awards potentially represent $138.7 million in ATP funding together with an industry cost-share of up to $104 million, if all projects are carried through to completion, according to a NIST news release.

The projects were chosen in a competition announced last April and represent the last set of R&D projects to be funded under the ATP, which was abolished under the America COMPETES Act. The act allows for continued support for ongoing ATP projects, including those chosen in the FY 2007 competition.

A complete list of the 2007 awardees can be found on the NIST Web site.
