Veratag licenses MEMflake resonator IP to Cornell

October 4, 2007 — Veratag LLC, an Albany, N.Y., company commercializing a security protocol for use in MEMS-based RFID devices, has announced it will license its IP to Cornell Research Foundation Inc.

Veratag will allow Cornell to work with intellectual property surrounding the use of MEMS resonators for unique identification in RFID and electronic lock and key systems. Veratag describes each MEMS resonator as unique as a snowflake — thus its name, MEMflake — each producing a unique analog signal that cannot be reproduced.

With the addition of an antenna, MEMflakes can be used for RFID applications, which can take advantage of the product’s low energy requirements..

Veratag CEO John Schneiter said in a news release that the company will focus first on applications such as smart cards, identity cards and passports, along with anti-counterfeit products for pharmaceuticals and high-end goods.
