Inficon snaps up Sigma, sees opto, solar plays

December 12, 2007 – Inficon, a Swiss manufacturer of instrumentation and process control software, has acquired Fort Collins, CO-based Sigma Instruments, a provider of instruments for measuring and controlling thin-film processes and quartz crystal microdevice components. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal expands Inficon’s capabilities in thin-film coating manufacturing for products like mobile phones, computers, digital cameras and other consumer electronics, noted Lukas Winkler, president/CEO, in a statement. It also continues a business strategy of beefing up the company’s quartz offerings — in early 2006 Inficon bought its raw quartz crystal supplier, and this summer acquired the assets of Maxtek — as well as provides some unspecified inroads into the solar manufacturing space, he said.
