Renesas beefing up backend, design in Malaysia

Jan. 11, 2008 – Renesas Technology says it will expand its backend process manufacturing in Malaysia for analog and discrete semiconductors, a business that represents about 10% of its sales (or, roughly ¥95.3B/US $868M in FY06). The plan involves a new building at Renesas Semiconductor (Kedah) Sdn. Bhd., one of its two local sites, doubling the company’s total production in Malaysia to around 1.2B units/month by August.

Renesas also has officially spun off its local design center; the new firm, Renesas Semiconductor Sdn. Bhd. (RSM) in Penang, capitalized at about ¥30M (~$275K). The company plans to reduce design & development costs by expanding overseas design resources to areas including China and Vietnam, while doubling headcount to 200 workers by fiscal 2009.
