Spire Semi to contract-manufacture solar concentrator cells

Jan. 24, 2008 – Spire Semiconductor says it will provide contract design and manufacturing capabilities for makers of solar concentrator cells, in addition to its existing lineup of GaAs solar cells, wafer epitaxy, and thin-film products.

Work utilizing >50MW of expandable capacity will be done in the firm’s 50,000 sq. ft facility in Hudson, NH, where the company operates a compound semiconductor device fabrication line ,and custom and production capabilities including III-V and deposition of broadband dual-layer AR coatings.

In a statement, Spire noted that its original optoelectronics division was an early pioneer in using GaAs for both concentrator solar arrays and space system solar cells, having developed and fabricated GaAs solar cells as early as 1985.
