Report: Grace buying NXP’s 200mm fab

Mar. 19, 2008 – The unexpected absence of Grace Semiconductor CEO Ulrich Schumacher from his scheduled keynote address at SEMICON China could be due to last-minute negotiations to buy NXP Semiconductor’s 200mm fab in Fishkill, NY, according to a report in Digitimes.

The publication noted that both companies did not directly respond to the speculation, but both echoed the ongoing trend of IDMs going “fab-lite” and increasing their outsourcing to foundry partners. Digitimes cited unnamed sources claiming that Grace has approached other companies as well, including Infineon (where Schumacher formerly was top exec) and STMicroelectronics, and points to Chinese reports that Grace likely will source 200mm equipment from both NXP and ST.
