Nanogate coats Europe’s largest city tunnel in Stockholm

July 31, 2008Nanogate and its cooperation partner ALRON, a Swedish manufacturer of special chemical products for the construction industry, will coat the city of Stockholm’s tunnel system, with Nanogate Technology, a nano-based product that repels dirt and grime.

All of the exposed concrete in the city’s 16 km Södra Länken tunnel system will be coated with NanoGuard StoneProtect, which reduces dirt adhesion, making cleaning easier. The operator will thereby incur lower cleaning costs and be able to reduce the use of environmentally harmful environmentally harmful cleaning agents.

The Södra Länken tunnel system is the largest in Sweden and the largest city tunnel in Europe. Constant exhaust fume pollution forces the operators of the tunnel to undertake cleaning operations regularly at great effort and expense. In addition, traffic must be diverted during cleaning, which imposes burdens on Stockholm’s traffic system.

Once coated in the NanoGuard Stone Protect, the tunnel won’t need to be cleaned as frequently and aggressive cleaning agents could be largely dispensed with. The reduced dirt adhesion will improve road safety in the tunnel as the exposed concrete can serve as a reflecting surface.
“The NanoGuard product family makes an attractive contribution in the area of ‘green nanotechnology’,” noted Ralf Zastrau , CEO of Nanogate AG.
