Jan. 8, 2008 – AU Optronics, Taiwan’s biggest maker of TFT-LCD panels, says it will extend its work with display technology into a pilot line for solar-cell panels at the Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung during this year. The company also is establishing a new “Energy Project Office” to direct its efforts in green energy.

Citing its “sound technology basis in the TFT-LCD sector and compatibility in numerous manufacturing processes, as well as technology maturity in thin-film solar power” (i.e., improvements in conversion efficiencies from 5%-8% to 8%-10+%, “AUO sees this as the right time to establish its “Energy Project Office,” the company said in a statement.
