Coopetition via radical collaboration

In his plenary presentation at the SPIE Advanced Lithography Conference, Bernard Meyerson, VP for strategic alliances and CTO, IBM Systems and Technology Group, urged the industry to embrace coopetition through radical collaboration — get the industry worldwide to work as a team to combine intellectual as well as physical capital.

Meyerson believes this new paradigm is necessary as way to not only get through the continued R&D funding crunch and economic crisis, but also as a way to ensure that progress will continue in the face of technology shrinks that will abate within a decade. “Those who stop innovating now, will not be here when things turn up,” he summarized.

SST‘s Debra Vogler caught up with Mark Slezak, director of lithography technology at JSR Micro, who noted that the concept of radical collaboration is already alive and well in the materials sector.
