Hynix brings NAND Flash memory to NOR maker Spansion

April 3, 2012 – PRNewswire — Spansion Inc. (NYSE:CODE) and SK Hynix formed an alliance to deliver Spansion SLC NAND Flash products at the 4x, 3x, and 2x nodes to the embedded market. Spansion is known as a NOR Flash memory provider.

The first Spansion SLC NAND products resulting from this alliance will be available in Q2 2012, with a family of NAND products available over the next few quarters. The companies also developed a patent cross-licensing agreement as part of the alliance.

The SLC NAND portfolio will offer longevity of supply for embedded customers, and will use CODE’s qualification, testing, extended temperature support, and packaging processes.

Spansion’s NAND products complement its NOR offering for embedded applications in automotive, industrial and telecommunications end-markets. Spansion’s Flash memory product portfolio is broadening because demand for NAND memory is growing in embedded segments, said John Kispert, president and CEO of Spansion. Spansion offers serial NOR and parallel NOR, and now SLC NAND through the SK Hynix deal.

Spansion recently entered volume production of its 512Mb Spansion FL-S Serial (SPI) NOR Flash memory, featuring the highest-density single-die serial Flash. The company is also developing charge-trapping NAND technology.

SK Hynix brings NAND manufacturing scale to CODE’s established embedded sector presence, said Oh Chul Kwon, president and CEO of SK Hynix. "Together we can deliver innovative NAND products to the embedded market- combining Spansion’s leadership position and established customer relationships across multiple embedded segments with SK Hynix’s NAND manufacturing size and scale."
