SIA Says March Semi Sales Were Up

05/03/2005  (May 03, 2005) San Jose, Calif.—Worldwide sales of semiconductors grew by 13.2% in the first quarter of 2005 compared to the same period of 2004, reports the SIA. Global sales of semiconductors during the first 3 months of 2005 amounted to $55.3 billion, compared to $48.9 billion in the first quarter of 2004. Sales were up 0.4% sequentially from revenues of $55.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004. March sales, at $18.4 billion, were up 2.2% from the February level of $18.0 billion.

SEMI to launch program for high school students in Singapore

ASE Investigates Cause of Fire at Chungli, Taiwan Facilities

05/02/2005  (May 02, 2005) Chungli, Taiwan—More details are available today from ASE Inc. about yesterday's fire at its Chungli, Taiwan facilities. The first 4 floors of the 11-floor building that housed part of ASE's operations for the production of interconnect materials were badly damaged. Most of the equipment and inventory on other floors, the majority of which is for semiconductor packaging and test, while not damaged by the fire, were damaged by smoke from the fire.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering reports fire accident at Chungli facility

05/02/2005  May 2, 2005 - Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. yesterday reported a fire at its semiconductor packaging and testing facilities in Chungli, Taiwan, which caused damage and injuries, but no deaths. The fire broke out at one of ASE's production buildings at approximately 2 pm following what it suspects was a boiler explosion on the ground floor of the 11-story building. The fire was contained by firefighters within two hours.

NASA looks to carbon to lighten spacecraft

05/02/2005  May 2, 2005 - NASA is teaming up with Rice University to develop power cables out of carbon nanotubes to lighten the load in spacecraft. Under an $11 million research grant, Rice will try to come up with a way to produce specialized types of nanotubes that will measure about a meter and conduct electricity 10 times more efficiently than metal. Prototypes of the nanotubes are due in 2009.
