Nanoparticles prove irresistible for cleanup of industrial waste

07/23/2003  The industrial age brought increased exposure to dangerous heavy metals like lead, mercury or arsenic as factories dumped contaminated wastewater into rivers and oceans. The nanotechnology age could mark the end of this particular toxic chapter. Scientists and manufacturers from Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom have developed a process that uses nanoparticles to draw heavy metals out of industrial wastewater with a little help from simple magnetism.

Power Paper extends 4th round to $15 million

07/22/2003  Power Paper Ltd., an Israeli provider of thin and flexible micro power source technology for toys, radio frequency identification tags and cosmetic patches, announced a $12 million extension to its fourth round of funding. The company previously announced $3 million in October of last year. The company has raised $29 million to date.

European firms try to carve their niche in tiny channels

07/21/2003  Dozens of companies in Europe are making new microarray and microfluidic devices for very specific applications, but European industry has yet to commercialize lab-on-chip (LOC) devices that can be used in a more flexible way. “We are looking for the flexibility of a mass spectrometer or a chromatograph for quality control in industry,” said Andreas Manz, an Imperial College of London professor and pioneer in LOC technology.
