Universities compete for NSF nanotech program worth millions

07/15/2003  The National Science Foundation is hip deep in selecting a group of universities to host a sweeping nanotech research effort, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN). Schools across the country have teamed up into various consortia vying for the project, worth as much as $140 million over the next decade.

Alien to land in North Dakota

07/15/2003  Alien Technology will build a plant in North Dakota to mass-produce its radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, according to a news release.

HandyLab gets $2M to develop DNA diagnostic device

07/15/2003  July 15, 2003 – HandyLab Inc. has been awarded a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advanced Technology Program to develop a highly sensitive, low-cost microfluidic device for health care, homeland security and agriculture applications, according to a news release.

With new cash, facility and focus, Tronic's tries for new markets

07/14/2003  TronicÂ’s Microsystems does not intend to remain at the research stage. The French company recently announced a new MEMS production facility and the close of two rounds of funding worth more than $12 million. Its next goal: The U.S. and Asian markets.

NanoOpto sells technology to Enplas Corp.

07/14/2003  NanoOpto Corp. will provide technology to a Japanese optical products firm, according to a news release.

Gartner: Semiconductor spending to rebound in 2003

07/11/2003  July 11, 2003 - Worldwide semiconductor capital spending will return to positive growth in 2003, the first time in two years, according to Gartner Inc. Spending is forecast to total $29.9 billion in 2003, a 7.9% increase from last year, when capital spending shrunk by 38%. Spending for capital equipment, wafer fab equipment, and packaging and assembly equipment is all on pace for growth this year, after each saw revenue declines of over 20% in 2002.

AmberWave, ADE partner for strained silicon metrology

Thin-film measurement system eliminates AMC

07/11/2003  JULY 11--SAN JOSE, Calif.--KLA-Tencor Corp. has unveiled AccuFilm, a technology that eliminates the effects of airborne molecular contamination (AMC) on ultra-thin-film measurements.

MEMS and the mask muddle: Small isn't cheap

07/11/2003  As silicon chip features get smaller, the cost of making the masks that print them is exploding. At 90 nanometers, the next step down for chip makers, a set of masks costs $1.5 million. At the step beyond that, 65 nanometers, those masks will probably cost about $4 million. And a single chip can use 20 or more masks. Mask makers are in hot pursuit of an "innovative" solution to the cost dilemma.

Omron launches last-mile MEMS devices

EPA sponsors nanomaterial research

07/11/2003  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring research on potential health and environmental effects from nanomaterials.

Matheson forms new specialty unit

07/10/2003  July 9, 2003 - Parsippany, NJ - Matheson Tri-Gas Inc. has formed a new electronic and specialty gas equipment team to serve customers requiring high-purity gas delivery systems. The team will be led by John Smickenbecker, director of ESG equipment sales, and be supported by the company's equipment technology center in Montgomeryville, PA.

August Technology acquires Counterpoint Solutions

07/10/2003  July 9, 2003 - August Technology, Minneapolis, MN, a manufacturer of automated inspection equipment, has acquired Counterpoint Solutions Inc., Thornwood, NY, a developer of wafer inspection, review, and failure analysis systems. The acquisition adds to August's defect disposition and device development capabilities. The all-stock deal is valued at approximately $1.45 million.
