ON Semiconductor lays off 1,000 workers

June 7, 2001 – Phoenix, AZ – ON Semiconductor Corp. is laying off about 1,000 workers worldwide and cutting back the salaries of remaining staff by 10%.

ON employs about 13,400 staff worldwide in nine manufacturing plants and 10 design centers.

The computer chip company, spun off from Motorola two years ago, said it was responding to a continuing slump in sales and in the economy in general.

Company spokesman Everett Tackett said the cuts will include senior executives as well as factory workers and will be spread over the company’s operations. Up to 200 of the 1,000 job cuts will be in Phoenix.

ON will also close its plants in Arizona and Rhode Island for two weeks starting June 24.

The layoff is the third for ON this year. The company cut 350 sales and administrative positions in February and cut another 630 jobs in April.
