Japanese semi equipment orders hit $18B

Japan–Oct. 23, 2000–Worldwide orders from Japanese toolmakers started an upward climb with 196.7 billion yen (US$18.2 billion) logged in August, according to the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ).

The figure represents a 3 billion yen increase over July’s bookings of 193.7 billion yen, and a significant drop from June’s orders of 228.8 billion yen. In a year-over-year comparison, August’s totals saw a dramatic increase of 118% over the 90 billion yen reported in August 1999.

Sales of equipment into the Japanese market, including imports from foreign tool suppliers, hit 74.2 billion yen. August’s figure is an increase of 2.6 billion yen over July’s 71.6 billion yen, and a 73.5% hike over the same period a year ago.
