Malaysia buys chip tech

September 9, 2003 – The Malaysian government has purchased ownership rights of a RFID chip technology from Japanese semiconductor developer FEC Inc., for an undisclosed amount, according to local news agencies.

Malaysia’s Silterra Malaysia and FEC will co-produce the “MM Chip,” which will be about five times smaller than conventional RFID chips.

Initial manufacturing will begin in Japan and be shifted to Malaysia by next year.
