Intel looking to Taiwan for chip designs

July 14, 2003 – Intel is planning to build a $29 million chip design center in Taiwan, the first for the company in the Asia Pacific region.

According to the China Post, the facility will develop designs for chips and system platforms. Intel will reportedly partner with domestic organizations to develop chips for broadband, Internet communications and other consumer technologies, and work more closely with them to accelerate the design of chips for wireless communications.

Intel already has agreements with Taiwan companies to establish an application design center, and is working with the government to promote the country’s semiconductor industry.
