Philips buys wireless chip firm Systemonic

Dec. 19, 2002 – Amsterdam – Philips Electronics NV said it would buy US-based Systemonic in an attempt to beef up its chipsets for wirelessly connected electronics devices, Reuters reported.

Systemonic has developed a dual chipset supporting all versions of WLAN technology, used to hook up computers and other electronics devices to the Internet and corporate networks. WLAN is an open industry standard that allows products from different manufacturers to connect with each other.

Philips said it will integrate Systemonic’s technology into its own series of Nexperia chips. The WLAN connection, mainly installed in laptop computers at the moment, will be built into mobile phones, webpads, personal video recording devices, and digital entertainment services.

The company did not disclose the price it had paid for Systemonic, which employs 89 staff in the US and Germany.
