Fujitsu cuts 3,000 jobs

Sept. 13, 2002 – Tokyo, Japan – Japanese electronics maker Fujitsu Ltd. will cut 3,000 jobs, or about 1.8% of its global work force, at two domestic plants due to a slowdown in the US telecommunications market.

All the cuts will be carried out through a voluntary early retirement program, Fujitsu spokeswoman Naomi Ogawa said.

The latest cutbacks follow those announced in August, when the company said it would eliminate 2,100 jobs, reported the Associated Press.

Ogawa said the two plants, both located in the northern Tochigi region, make fiber optics-related products and mobile phones. It hasn’t been decided whether the plants will close, Ogawa said.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, Fujitsu cut 22,000 jobs. The company employs about 170,000 workers worldwide.
