AMD’s Thailand plant ups production

July 22, 2002 – Thailand – AMD (Thailand), a subsidiary of the Sunnyvale, CA-based IC maker, has increased
production to four million units/week.

Nitis Niyomyatra, senior engineering manager, said electronics orders have rebounded and boosted production from last year’s levels of about three million units/week. However, current production is still well below full capacity of seven million units achieved by AMD (Thailand) during 2000.

Nitis attributed the rise to increased production of its new FBGA (Find Pitch Ball Grid Array), which requires
higher production-technology skills.

The AMD (Thailand) plant in Pakred, Nonthaburi province, produces ICs for cell phones and PCs. It exports all its production to customers including Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson, reported the Financial Times. The company has invested about US$1 billion (Bt41 billion) in the plant, which generates sales of about $1 billion.
