November 2, 2005 – Intel has reopened a facility in Chandler, AZ, converting it to a 65nm-process, 300mm wafer manufacturing facility called Fab 12. It is the company’s second volume-production fab using 65nm technology on 300mm wafers. The Fab 12 conversion project, begun in 2004 and costing roughly $2 billion, was completed in ~18 months. Fab 12 is Intel’s fifth fab using 300mm wafers. As part of the conversion project, Intel sent more than 800 Fab 12 employees to other Intel fabs, including those in Ireland, Oregon, and New Mexico, during the construction phase to obtain advanced training on the latest tools and leading-edge 300mm technology. The reopening of Fab 12 is the most recent in a string of announcements from the company regarding reinvestment in its US manufacturing sites, which reflect a combination of more than $4 billion of new US-based manufacturing expansion announced this year and completion of this $2 billion investment announced in 2004. Intel says the combined efforts will add more than 2000 jobs.
