March 8, 2004 – Analyst firm IDC predicts sales of chips for personal computers will grow 18% in 2004, but flat spending on desktop systems will slow that to 7.8% annual growth to single digits by 2008, Reuters reports.
By 2008 the market will have grown from $45.4 billion to $66.1 billion, with 16% average yearly growth in notebook PC chip sales, but only 2.9% in desktop PC chip sales, according to IDC.
“We’re a little bit concerned about desktop PC growth,” admitted IDC analyst Shane Rau. “They don’t align with the mobility trend.”
