Renesas raising bar in China

July 1, 2004 – Japanese chipmaker Renesas Technology Corp. said it will spend 30 billion yen ($275.7 million) over the next three years to boost its presence in China, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

About 60% of the investment will go to its chip assembly plant in Beijing, with the rest flowing to its operations in Jiangsu Province. The Hitachi/Mitsubishi JV, which recently announced plans to establish a regional HQ in Shanghai, wants to triple its capacity in China to 60 million chips/month.

Renesas achieved sales in China of 80 billion yen in fiscal 2003, and is projecting sales of 300 billion yen ($2.76 billion) in 2007 and 650 billion yen ($5.97 billion) by 2010.
