November 11, 2004 – Samsung Electronics has developed the world’s highest-capacity “fusion” chip for wide-ranging applications in high-end mobile phones, according to a company statement, reported the Korea Times. The 1-gigabyte OneNAND fusion memory combines NAND flash memory, SRAM, and system logic in one chip.

Manufactured with 90nm technology, the new chip should benefit memory-intensive applications in third-generation mobile phones, as well as portable computing, the company said. The new product can process data up to 67 times faster than NOR flash memory and four times faster than NAND-only flash memory. The new chip is expected to help enhance the photo-taking functions of Samsung’s 5-megapixel camera phone, said the company.
