Report: Japan leads modest EDA growth in 2005

April 6, 2006 – Revenues for companies offering IC physical design and verification totaled $1.21 billion in 2005, a 4% increase over 2004, although growth during 4Q improved 6% compared with the same period a year ago, according to data from the EDA Consortium.

Semiconductor IP revenue rose by 12% to $816 million. Revenues for printed circuit board (PCB) and multichip module (MCM) layout totaled $342 million for all of 2005, flat compared to 2004. Overall EDA industry revenues rose 3% to a record $4.58 billion.

By region, Japan showed the strongest sales growth (10%, to $1.02 billion), a new record for the region, , while the Rest-of-world region witnessed a 7% sales increase to $552 million. Both regions posted 12% growth in 4Q05.

North America, EDA’s largest customer base with 45% global share, saw flat growth in 2005 with $2.13 billion in revenues, improving to 5% for 4Q05. EDA sales in Europe (22% share) were up 1% for the year, but decreased 3% during the final quarter.
