April 14, 2006 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. will spend $220 million to build its next 300mm facility in Austin, TX, with construction beginning this year. The company’s existing site in Austin is a 200mm facility.
The $220 million is “a separate overseas investment” and on top of the company’s nearly $6.0 billion capital spending budget already laid out for this year, the company noted. Samsung plans to invest $33 billion by 2012 in the next phase of expansion at its huge operations in Hwaseong, South Korea.
Other cities were vying for the new Samsung fab in the US. New York governor George Pataki reportedly was ready to double the $231 million in tax breaks and incentives offered by Austin in order to lure Samsung to invest in Albany, NY.
