Spansion ramps to 25k WPM at 300mm NOR fab

Mar. 6, 2008 – Spansion says it has ramped to >25k WPM at its SP1 300mm/65nm fab in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan, with some of its “top customers” qualifying products.

Bertrand Cambou, president and CEO of Spansion, noted in a statement that the production ramp at SP1 “should rapidly reduce our reliance on external foundries and older technology nodes,” providing greater capacity at lower costs structures.

Jim Handy, a principal analyst with Objective Analysis, echoed in the statement that ramping production at SP1 enables MirrorBit products with a lower cost structure, boosting Spansion’s market competitiveness. “There are a number of companies that have tried getting into that and have had a problem with it,” he noted.

Spansion says its MirrorBit technology offers higher yields and scales more easily to higher densities than traditional floating-gate NOR technology.

SP1 is co-located and shares some resources with Spansion’s JV3 fab, including employees and facilities. SP1 is planned to migrate to 45nm Mirrorbit products in 2009.
