Dr. Smalley is widely known for the discovery of C60 Buckminsterfullerene (the “buckyball”), for which he received the1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He was the founding director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University, and is now director of the Carbon Nanotechnology Laboratory at Rice.
