AMD Search Heating Up

July 6, 2001 — AUSTIN, TX — Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is said to be eyeing six possible sites in Austin on which it may build a multi-billion chip manufacturing plant.

The company is considering four sites near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and two on South Interstate 35 for a $3-$4 million chip facility, according to a report in the Austin American-Statesman.

The original list of possible sites was as high as 17, according to the story.

An AMD official said the company could decide on a site for the proposed plant by the end of the year, but did not say if it would be in Austin or elsewhere. According to the report, at least two dozen cities are vying for the plant, with some offering incentive plans valued at up to $1 billion. Austin has offer $95 million in tax breaks.
