530,000 Lbs. Of Meat Recalled in E. Coli Scare

August 27, 2001 — WASHINGTON, DC — A Green Bay, Wisconsin firm is recalling 530,000 pounds of meat that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the U.S Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Green Bay Dressed Beef, Inc. is voluntarily recalling the ground beef products following a follow-up sampling as a result of a retail recall earlier in the month.

“Because of the potential hazard of foodborne illness, I urge consumers who have purchased these products not to eat them and to return them to the place of purchase,” said Margaret O’K Glavin, associate administrator for FSIS.

Two of the products are identifiable to consumers, while eight additional products were distributed to wholesale establishments. The consumer products include five pound tubes of Pure Ground Beef labeled “sell by Aug/19/01” and sold in South Carolina, and three and five pound tubes of Kroger Ground Beef labeled “sell by Aug/19/01 amd sold in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

Products that were distributed on the wholesale level include: Beef Chuck Coarse Ground; Beef Chuck Fine Ground; Beef Round Coarse Ground; Beef Round Fine Ground; Beef Sirloin Coarse Ground; Beef Sirloin Fine Ground; Ground Beef Coarse Ground; and, Ground Beef Fine Ground.
