October 15, 2001 — STOCKHOLM — A number of biotech and governmental entities are developing what they say will be a top-of-the-line biomedical park in Sweden.

The proposed Stockholm BioScience project, which is expected to be up and running by 2005, is expected to create up to 8,000 jobs. The park will be situated on a nearly 62-acre parcel of land.

“With the prominent position already occupied by Sweden in such areas as gene cell, cancer and neurological research, Stockholm BioScience could well develop into a leading knowledge center,” said Han Wigzell, vice chancellor of the Karolinska Institute. Wigzell and John Skar, a professor at the school, developed the project.

In addition to the Karolinska Institute, nearby Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University will take part in the project. The Stockholm Foundation of Technology Transfer, a public foundation that promotes the transfer of knowledge between the academic and industrial bodies, is also supporting the park.

“What we aiming to create is not a traditional Science Park. Instead, this will be a venture that forms part of the city of Stockholm,” Wigzell said.
