Aug. 17, 2004 – Hybrid Plastics (Profile, News, Web) has received a research and development grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Missile Defense Agency to develop low-cost radiation shielding, according to a news release.
The Phase 1 award, potentially worth $850,000, calls on Hattiesburg, Miss.-based Hybrid to make coatings to shield microelectronic, optical and sensory components from radiation on space-based devices. The company is using its POSS nanomaterials, which are designed to improve thermal and mechanical properties of traditional polymers, but are easily incorporated through existing manufacturing methods.
For development and testing, Hybrid is working with San Marcos, Calif.-based Full Circle Research Inc.
